Vendar je ocena njihove varnosti izredno pomembna za varovanje zdravja ljudi in okolja. ENM-ji lahko vstopijo v telo (namerno ali nenamerno) po razli\u010dnih poteh, pri \u010demer so vdihavanje, dermalna adsorpcija in zau\u017eitje, najverjetnej\u0161i na\u010dini nenamerne izpostavljenosti v delovnem ali \u017eivljenjskem okolju [14]. V zadnjem desetletju so bili potencialni \u0161kodljivi u\u010dinki ENM obse\u017eno raziskani, vendar v literaturi ni veliko podatkov posebej o oceni varnosti nanocimov, ki na splo\u0161no veljajo za biokompatibilne materiale. Kljub temu pa je potrebno sistemati\u010dno preu\u010devati njihovo toksi\u010dnost, zlasti za tiste nanocime, ki se uporabljajo v biomedicini in hrani. Prej\u0161nja poro\u010dila so pokazala, da je bilo ve\u010d nanomizmov uporabljenih za terapevtske \u0161tudije na \u017eivalskih modelih, vendar pa njihov prenos v klini\u010dno uporabo ostaja velik izziv. Trenutno je nekaj superparamagnetnih nanodelcev \u017eelezovega oksida, ki jih je odobrila FDA (ZDA Uprava za hrano in zdravila; iz angl. U.S. Food and Drug Administration), pokazalo peroksidazi podobno aktivnost in se uporabljajo za spodbujanje proliferacije mati\u010dnih celic [15]. Zato je zelo pomembno oceniti in opredeliti \u0161kodljiv vpliv nanocimov na okolje in organizme. Namre\u010d, nanocimi lahko s\u010dasoma kon\u010dajo v okolju, kjer se lahko zaradi svoje visoke stabilnosti in kataliti\u010dne aktivnosti ohranijo dlje \u010dasa in vplivajo na organizme, ki \u017eivijo v teh okoljih.
