As a result, they have become increasingly important in food supplements, cosmetics, phytomedicine and foods, where they are gaining recognition as “novel food”— which opens the door to new formulations and sustainable products. The removal of Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) from hemp extracts is essential, as THC is a psychoactive compound whose presence can affect the safety, legality, and marketability of final products.

The OXICAN project focuses on developing an innovative process for the selective removal of THC in hemp extracts, which will be efficient and result in safe products suitable for use in consumer goods. However, during the oxidation of THC, oxidised CBD derivatives inevitably form. Their biological effects are still poorly understood and may pose potential risks. OXICAN addresses this scientific and regulatory gap by employing advanced human 3D in vitro models that better mimic the physiological environment of tissues in vivo, enabling more accurate predictions of biological responses and more reliable safety assessments.

Key objectives of the project are:

To develop a process for effective and selective removal of THC and to chemically characterise the oxidised CBD derivatives formed during the process.

Assessment of the (geno)toxicity of hemp extracts using advanced in vitro models and approaches.

Preparation of a risk matrix as a basis for safety guidelines.

Transfer of results into the industrial environment, including the formulation of recommendations for managing harmful oxidised forms of CBD.

The project directly contributes to Area S5 – Sustainable Food Production, by addressing the safety of plant-based bioactive compounds, increasingly used in food products. The results will be valuable for consumers, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies, supporting the development of safer hemp-based products.

We are open for collaborations, if you’re interested please contact Alja Štern PhD.

Cannabidiol (CBD)-rich hemp extracts combine natural functionality, a wide range of potential health benefits, and high market value.
