In the Kozjanski Park collection orchard, more than 125 indigenous and traditional varieties of apple trees and more than 60 pear varieties are growing. The orchard is also home to other traditional fruit species, such as plums, cherries and service trees. Each variety has its own story, characteristics and flavour, together creating a remarkable richness of Kozjansko’s fruit-growing heritage.
The orchard is not only a place where fruit grows, but also an important habitat for numerous animals. Nesting boxes and various shelters for beneficial insects have been installed, including habitats for ladybirds, earwigs and wild bees. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the important role these smallest inhabitants play in the life of the orchard.
Visitors can begin their exploration at the “In the Orchard” Interpretation Centre, where interactive exhibits and activities introduce them to the diversity of fruit species and varieties and to the many forms of life found in the orchard. They will also have the opportunity to test their ability to recognise bird calls and expand their knowledge of different apple varieties.
The exploration will then continue outdoors. As they walk among the fruit trees, visitors will discover the rhythms of life in the orchard at various information points throughout the orchard.
