How does a researcher cope when there is no longer a laboratory, equipment or comforts – but only the wilderness, their own knowledge and survival skills? Žiga Ogorelec, a researcher at the Department of Organism and Ecosystem Research at NIB, experienced this first-hand as a contestant on the 13th series of the survival show Alone on the History Channel, which is considered one of the toughest survival competitions and in which he achieved an outstanding result. In his talk, he will reveal what went on behind the scenes, what such an experience is like up close, and what life in the wilderness taught him about nature, humanity and scientific research.
