Programme

Workshops for participants of the summer camp organized by the Institute for Children’s Vacation and Recreation

From Berry to Seed to Berry…

Inside a plant cell are numerous cell organelles (nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria…), which perform various functions. The nucleus contains DNA, which acts as a carrier of genetic information across generations. A gene is the basic unit of heredity, the carrier of a genetic trait. At the molecular level, a gene is a segment of a DNA molecule. During the workshop, we tried to isolate plant DNA from the nucleus of a plant cell.

The workshop was conducted by researchers from the Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology at the National Institute of Biology (NIB)

Plants Transport Water

Plants pump large amounts of water from the soil into the atmosphere. That’s why it’s pleasantly cool in their shade during the summer. If we observe the juice closely through a straw, we can see that the juice level in the straw is slightly higher than in the glass. Workshop participants learned why. We also considered whether it’s easier to sip juice through a long or short straw, or through a thin or thick one. We discussed how water flows through plants. If we color the water, we can even see it with the naked eye! In addition, we can turn white flowers into colorful ones.

The workshops were led by researchers from the Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology at the National Institute of Biology (NIB)
