The Archaeological Centre is a vibrant cultural hub where dialogue between the past and the present comes to life and creativity is fostered. No matter how unusual or ordinary objects may appear, they offer us windows into history and connect us with our past. At the end of 2020, the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana (MGML) established the MGML Archaeological Centre in a hangar at the former airport in Moste. Covering an area of 800 m², the centre provides temporary storage for archaeological material, finds and samples, organic materials, large quantities of ceramic building material, mosaic fragments and individual architectural elements. The centre carries out various stages of archaeological work, provides logistical and professional support for archaeological research, undertakes the initial processing and preventive conservation of archaeological material, and is responsible for its museological documentation and loan. It also manages and stores archaeological site archives and lends material to external users. The centre is also becoming a platform for collaboration with external experts from a range of disciplines.

During a guided tour of the MGML Archaeological Centre, you will discover what archaeologists do once excavations have been completed and see fascinating artefacts such as Roman sarcophagi, amphorae and jewellery. You will also find out what happens to objects that do not make it into museum display cases. You will learn why we use distilled water, how wood should be stored, why certain types of pottery are not washed, and discover many other behind-the-scenes secrets of archaeological work.

Advance registration is required. To book a guided tour, please contact us at prijava@mgml.si or call +386 (0)1 24 12 506 (weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.).

The guided tour is free of charge.
