The main objectives of the  project are:

• Optimize the inactivation of selected plant and human viruses and/or their surrogates using hydrodynamic cavitation in water.

• Optimize the inactivation of selected plant and human viruses and/or their surrogates using cold atmospheric plasma in water.

• Develop and optimize an experimental device to sustain plasma in bubbles created by cavitation and study the combined effects (synergy) of both plasma and cavitation on viruses in water. For comparison, chemical methods, e.g. chlorination, will be performed in parallel.

• Assess the potential biological effects of water treated with combined plasma and hydrodynamic cavitation on plants and human cells.

• Evaluation of the upscale potential of the optimized experimental device at pilot scale or wastewater plant scale.
